In order to extend the life of your hardwood floors there are a few rules that you need to follow. Hardwood floors are quite expensive, and it’s important to maintain them in order to avoid having to replace them. If you do not want to replace your hardwood floors, follow these rules and enjoy living with the original floors that you purchased for a very long time.

Sweep and Vacuum

Sweeping and vacuuming are the two top things that you can do to prevent your hardwood floors from deteriorating. It may seem tedious, but taking the time to sweep and vacuum your floors at least once a week gets rid of harmful dust that will eventually wear away at your floors. This dirt, known as “ground in dirt” can destroy your floors if you are not careful about staying routine in your sweeping and mopping habits. If you are unable to find the time to regularly sweep and mop your floors, do not hesitate to hire someone to do it for you. The money that you spend will not even come close to equally the money you will have to spend if you hardwood floors get ruined by dirt and other grime.

Remove Water Immediately

Water is one of the most damaging elements that can be exposed to your hardwood floors. Water has the potential to warp the wood particles and essentially ruin the shape and function of your flooring. If water it left to sit on your floor for a prolonged period of time, you may not be able to reverse the damage. This being said, it’s important that you clean up water and liquid spills as soon as they occur. Anything that contains water will have the same effect as water on your hardwood floors. This includes mud, soda, juices, etc. The sooner you clean the water up from your floor, the less likely you are going to have to worry about permanent damage.

Be Careful With Your Rugs

If you are decorated your home with rugs to add a little something extra to your wood flooring, be careful about the type of rug that you pick out. Rug dyes have been known to stain wood floors, and the plastic backing on certain rugs can leave you and your floors with permanent damage. In order to find a rug that will be safe on your hardwood floor, consult with a professional or buy something simple that you know carries no risk of penetrating your flooring. The carpet store can always make a recommendation and help you make an informed decision when it comes to choosing a rug that will not damage your hardwood floors and will look beautiful as well.
