Boca Raton Carpet Cleaning Tips on Removing Gum

remove gum from carpet cleaning

There are a number of different ways to remove gum from your carpet, and choosing the right one may make the difference in whether or not you will need to replace a portion of your carpeting. Gum is tricky, and can actually get further embedded into the fibers of the carpet if not dealt with properly, making it nearly impossible to remove. If you have children or frequent guests, you may have dealt with this issue before. It isn’t always necessary to call a professional carpet cleaner. There are a few things you can try on your own first in order to remove gum from you carpet.

Ice Cubes

If the gum is not deeply embedded into the carpet, you can usually use ice cubes in order to remove it. Hold the ice cube or cubes over the gum until it hardens. This allows the gum to harden and crack into pieces that can be easily lifted off of the carpet. There may be a small stain left behind that can be removed with water or club soda overnight. Using an ice cube is probably the cleanest way of removing gum from your carpet.

Peanut Butter

Believe it or not, creamy peanut butter is a great way to remove chewing gum from your carpet. Peanut butter contains natural oil that makes it easy for the gum to lift off of the fibers of your carpet. Take a tablespoon of peanut butter and a little bit of water and smear it over the chewing gum. Next, use a washcloth to life the gum from the surface of the carpet. The oils should effectively penetrate the stickiness of the gum and help remove it completely. There will most likely be a stain left behind. This can be removed with traditional cleaning methods. This is a messier method, but all in all it has proven to be effective.

Vegetable Oil, WD-40 and Goo Gone

If all else fails, you can try vegetable oil, goo gone, and WD-40. Use vegetable oil and WD-40 sparingly and be sure to clean the affected area well afterwards. Goo Gone contains directions on the label that you can follow to remove chewing gum from your carpet.

For more severe chewing gum incidents, steam your carpet for easier lifting. A good steam cleaning with proper, natural cleaning agents will remove the gum from your carpet entirely.
