How to Prevent Mold and Mildew in Your Shower

Your shower is prime real estate for mold and mildew. The wet atmosphere allows these unwanted messes to build up and cause unsightly spots in what is supposed to be a haven of cleanliness. A professional grout cleaning every once in a while is highly recommended, but there are a few preventative things you can do on your own.

Steps for Mold and Mildew Prevention

Keep Room Ventilated

Mold and mildew thrive in damp areas, so making your bathroom as ventilated as possible is the first step toward prevention. If you have a fan in your bathroom, you should always use it while taking a shower. If you have a window, think about cracking it open a little bit to get some extra ventilation, or keep your bathroom door open while showering if you’re in a private space.

Use A Good Shower Curtain

If your shower requires a curtain, use one that is made of cotton or nylon. These are great because you can throw them in the washer for a thorough cleaning every now and then. Plastic shower curtains grow mildew easily and must be replaced far more often.

Wipe Shower Walls Down

As additional preventative care, take a few minutes to wipe down your shower every time you use it. Get a squeegee and wipe down the walls and door, and all over the tub walls. A squeegee doesn’t work very well in those pesky corners, but a washcloth will do the job.

Lastly, and obviously, keep it clean! If cleaned regularly with a good cleanser and brush, your shower will remain fresh and mildew free. All these measures combined will keep your shower or tub sparkling clean, but sometimes it’s worth it to get a fresh start by hiring a professional.
