How To Remove Stains From Furniture

By

When you get any type of stain on your upholstery, it’s nice to be able to have a reliable cleaning service that you can call, but it’s even better to be able to remove the stains yourself. The issue with any type of stain is that if you don’t act fast, it does exactly what it’s called, stain. So, if you find yourself struggling to remove any stains that you, your children, or your pets cause, we’ve compiled a list of tips and tricks to help you out with future spills.

Tips For Removing Furniture Stains On Your Own

1.) Act Fast. As soon as the spill happens, you want to act fast before it sets further into the fabric. However, you do NOT want to wipe the stain, but blot it with a warm, damp cloth.

2.) Check The Label. Once you’ve removed as much of the stain as you can, you want to check the label to see the washing instructions. If you see the letter “W,” that means you can clean the item yourself with a “water based” detergent. If you see the letter “X,” then that means it needs to be professionally cleaned. If you have a slip cover on top of the couch, never wash it yourself; always take it to the dry cleaners.

3.) Mixing Your Cleaning Solution. If you can clean the stain yourself (remember, if it has the “W” on the instructions), your solutions depends on what was spilled on the furniture.

  • For MOST food and beverage stains, one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid and two cups of water should remove the stain if you blot it with a cloth. Once the stain is removed, you want to dab the spot with cold water to remove the soap then blot it dry.
  • For grease, butter, and gravy stains (thicker foods), you’ll want to sprinkle a bit of baking soda on the stain then let it sit for about 15 minutes. After it sits for the eloted time, vacuum the stain and apply a DRY cleaning solvent to the area and blot with a white cloth until the stain is absorbed.

If your furniture requires professional cleaning with stain removal, then contact cleaning professionals in your area that can leave your furniture looking brand new.
