Few things are worse than walking into your home after a long day and seeing that your pet made an accident on the carpet and now is leaving you to spent all day on trying to clean out the urine odor, but what can you do? You love them, as they’re basically like your child. Although you may not want to yell at them, we understand the frustration, especially with the smell that it can leave behind, but we’re here to help.

Removing pet odor from your carpeting – although not the ideal task – is easier than it sounds as long as you have the right supplies so, let’s start there.

Cleaning Supplies You’ll Need:

  • White Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Dish Soap
  • Hydrogen Peroxide (3%)

Now, the first step is to determine how long the stain has been sitting there. If you caught them in the act, then you want to grab paper towel and absorb as much of it as you can. However, don’t use your hands, keep your shoes on and layer the paper towel then step on it, you really want to pick up as much of it as possible. If you own a wet/dry vacuum, you also want to pull that bad boy out.

Mixing the solution is easy. You want to make sure that you have a spray bottle that is both new and empty, or washed out from another cleaning solution that was previously in it. Fill the spray bottle with 50% water and 50% white vinegar. You want to spray enough to where you’re confident it penetrated deep into the carpet fibers.

Then you want to grab your paper towels again and soak up as much of the solution you sprayed as possible, and again, if you have a wet/dry vacuum, use that.

Lastly, you want to take a handful of that baking soda and scatter it over the affected area. Then take the hydrogen peroxide and take a quarter cup and mix it with a teaspoon of the dish soap. Take that solution and work it into the carpet on top of the baking soda. Once you’ve really worked that into the carpeting, take your vacuum and clean up the dried baking soda that’s sitting on top of the now, non-existent stain.
